Giving Up on Gump's

In a post this week at Passage des Perles about gifts for Mother's Day, one of the suggestions was a jade ring from the venerable San Francisco store, Gump's. It's been years since I have even thought about that store, especially because they closed their Beverly Hills location more than a decade ago.
Which made me wonder, given the Gump's price point, who would buy jewelry there and why?

Green Jade Saddle Ring in 14K from Gump's $2300

(Beladora2 would sell this ring for under $500)

(Beladora2 would sell this pendant for less than $400)

If you are considering something in jade for a Mother's Day gift
Don't forget the 10% discount code which is PSEU
Yeah...go ahead and try getting that from Gump's!

Love those carved pendants! They remind me of the amazing jade carvings at the DeYoung Museum in the Asian Antiquities section.

I've wondered about Gump's for some time. My elderly aunt has some stunning jade pieces, large carved pendants, that she bought from Gumps in the 1960s and 1970s, but the pieces I see in the catalog look uninspiring, especially at those prices. They seem to have different things in the store, although it has been years since I have been, so I can't say for sure. But I do wonder if they sell lower quality good online or the store has changed as well.

Hmm, I've just looked at Gumps site after posting here, and they do seem to sell what I remember from the store. Still, it makes me wonder.

LPC, I'm a woman with a mission when I see jewelry sold at crazy prices.
Pseu, I adore jade especially the big carved jade pendants.
Mardel, I always loved Gump's but I wonder how they stay in business with those prices.

Gump's, like Tiffany, have a reputation for which some people will pay a premium. And some people only want new pieces. I am not defending them, however I much prefer the simplicity of their saddle ring to your piece shown. Two very different pieces.
