September Sundays In Southern California

Southern California Sundays
A week ago at Dana Point Harbor in Orange County
Watching the J24's come back into the harbor from their regatta while sipping one of these
Then yesterday back to the hiking trail in the Santa Monica Mountains
From Brentwood, four miles predominantly up to the ranger station on Mulholland Drive where you can see from the north San Fernando Valley to the peaks of the San Bernardino Mountains to the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. Then four miles predominantly down...thank god.
There's not much to admire in the landscape of the late California summer. Most of the green is gone.  Which is just as well, because I'm not admiring the view. I hike mostly with my eyes focused on the trail, on the lookout for snakes, dodging out of control mountain bikers, ipod on listening to an audio book.

I also love audiobooks I am listening to a really good one called "The Passage" at the moment. xx
I must stop listening late at night as I slept through two chapters the other night

Ruth, yes: no audio books at night. I sleep through them too. I listen to them only at the gym, on hikes and on airplanes.

Belle Biv deVoe ~ I totally know what you mean by out of control mountain bikers! Wimpy weekend warrior types. Whenever I spot one I feel like knocking it down, pour encourager les autres. It's a lot more fun, in my opinion, to observe the panic that ensues when you inadvertently happen upon nude sunbathers or a couple having sex among the cacti.

LBT: I never run into nude sunbathers or couples having sex among the cacti on my trail.
Ah yes, I miss hiking the Crystal Cove trail in Laguna Beach...of course I only saw bobcats and huge snakes there...no one au natural.

It's happened at Crystal Cove. As an amateur zoologist I actually step off the trails looking to find the wildlife and that's when I encounter said couples. In Laguna Beach, at Victoria beach, I have stumbled upon nude sunbathers (female, fortunately), as well as impromptu nude photo shoots. But that's California for you.

Dear Belle, that looks like the perfect way to spend a Sunday. I'm glad you're getting some good weather. We had a beautiful sunny day on Tuesday, grey and absolutely pouring down all day today xx
